Vigilante Coffee Company was started by Christopher Vigilante on his back porch in Trinidad, Washington D.C. in the Atlas District in January of 2012.
However, Mr. Vigilante’s passion for coffee began a few years earlier while living and working in the Hawaiian Islands. The coffee industry in Hawaii was an interesting place to begin his journey in coffee. Coffee in Hawaii is grown year round and is a destination for some of the world’s finest coffee professionals. While in Hawaii, Mr. Vigilante worked directly with these professionals and developed relationships with farms on Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Mr. Vigilante went on to help establish the award winning farm of Manoa Valley. In 2010, the Manoa Valley coffee won best of Oahu and in 2011, Mr. Vigilante was given the opportunity to present the Manoa Valley coffee as a gift to the President of the United States.
Washington D.C. and the H st. Corridor
A few years after returning to the mainland, working in a few cafes and roasting on the side, Mr. Vigilante decided that D.C. was the perfect place to start Vigilante Coffee Company. With the help of friends and family, Vigilante Coffee took the plunge and established themselves as DC's specialty micro coffee roaster specializing in direct source coffee.
Vigilante Coffee Co. offers a wide variety of the best tasting coffees to meet their customers' needs, to include award winning Hawaiian green beans farm-direct from the Big Island of Hawaii and Oahu, the places near and dear to Mr. Vigilante’s coffee-admiring heart. It was these unique coffees that allowed for the Vigilante Coffee Co. to distinguish itself from other coffee companies.
However, as the company grew so did the demand for coffee.
They realized that to meet demand they would need to bring in beans from other parts of the world.
Refusing to sacrifice quality, the Vigilante team knew what they had to do…”We understood that to get
the best coffee from the farm, we had to go directly to the farmer.”
So, in April of 2012 the Vigilante Coffee Co. set out on a coffee mission to Medellin, Colombia. The mission was to source their coffees directly from the “Taza de Excellencia” or “Cup of Excellence” farms. After spending ten days traveling to farms and meeting with producers, they were amazed by the sights, smells, and tastes of Colombian coffee. Upon their return, they began purchasing directly from two different farms. These coffees, San Sebastian and Las Mingas, are now available throughout Washington DC.
These days, the Vigilante team is hard at work roasting, traveling to farmer’s markets around the greater DC area, serving their wholesale customers, and operating a pop-up café out of Hogo in Chinatown. They are also preparing for the Grand Opening of the Maketto: Asian Market opening on H St. NE in early fall. Vigilante is joining the Toki Underground & Durkl Team in this unique endeavor and will be running a roastery & coffee bar on the second floor of the Maketto.
The business continues to grow as more and more people are introduced to the quality coffees Vigilante offers.
